About the Medicine

Efinaconazole

Indications

Efinaconazole is an antifungal solution applied to the nails. It is used to treat fungal infection of the toenails (onychomycosis), which causes nails to become thick, discoloured (white, yellow or brown), crumbly or lifted from the nail bed.

How It Works

Efinaconazole belongs to the triazole group of antifungals. It blocks an enzyme the fungus needs to make ergosterol, a key part of its cell membrane. Without it, the fungus cannot grow and dies. The solution is designed to spread into and under the nail to reach the infection.

Dosage and Administration

The usual adult use of the 10% solution is once a day on each affected toenail for 48 weeks, or as directed by your doctor. Apply to clean, completely dry nails, using the brush applicator to cover the whole nail surface, the skin folds around it, the edges and under the tip of the nail. Let it dry fully. Do not apply nail polish or cosmetic nail products while using it. Apply at least 10 minutes after a bath or shower. Healthy new nail grows slowly, so improvement takes many months.

Interactions

No important interactions with medicines taken by mouth are known, as very little reaches the blood. Avoid using other nail products on the treated nails.

Contraindications

  • Known allergy to Efinaconazole or any ingredient of the solution.

Side Effects

Side effects are usually limited to the treated area: ingrown toenail, redness, itching, burning, blistering or dermatitis of the skin around the nail, and pain at the application site.

Get urgent medical help if you notice signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as widespread rash, swelling of the face or difficulty breathing. See a doctor if there is spreading redness, pus, severe pain or swelling around the nail, especially if you have diabetes or poor circulation.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Very little is absorbed into the body, but safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established. Use only if your doctor advises it. Nail fungus is not urgent and treatment can often wait until after pregnancy.

Precautions and Warnings

For use on toenails and surrounding skin only. Do not get it in the eyes, mouth or vagina. The solution is flammable: keep it away from heat and flames, including during application and drying. It can stain or damage some fabrics and surfaces. People with diabetes, poor circulation or a weak immune system should have their feet checked by a doctor. The diagnosis should be confirmed before long treatment.

Overdose

Using more than directed is unlikely to cause serious harm but may irritate the skin. If swallowed, rinse the mouth and contact a doctor.
