About the Medicine

Sodium Fluoride

Indications

Sodium Fluoride is a source of fluoride used to help prevent tooth decay (dental caries). It is found in mouthwashes, toothpastes, gels and some tablets or drops. Mouthwashes containing it are used daily to strengthen tooth enamel, reduce sensitivity in some products and support oral hygiene, especially in people at higher risk of cavities, such as those wearing braces or with a dry mouth.

How It Works

Fluoride is taken up into the outer layer of the teeth (enamel). It makes the enamel harder and more resistant to acid made by mouth bacteria, helps repair very early decay (remineralisation) and slows the growth of the bacteria that cause cavities.

Dosage and Administration

For mouthwash: adults and children over 6 to 12 years (check the label), usually rinse with about 10 ml for 30 to 60 seconds once or twice a day, then spit it out. Do not swallow. Do not eat or drink for 30 minutes afterwards for best effect. Use toothpaste and gels as directed on the label. Fluoride tablets or drops for children should be used only on the advice of a dentist or doctor, because the dose depends on age and the fluoride level of local drinking water.

Interactions

Calcium, magnesium and aluminium products (such as antacids or milk) can reduce absorption of swallowed fluoride. Using several fluoride products at the same time, along with fluoride-rich water, may lead to too much fluoride in children. Ask your dentist if unsure.

Contraindications

Do not use if you are allergic to any ingredient. Mouthwashes are not suitable for young children who cannot reliably spit out. Fluoride supplements should not be given where drinking water already contains enough fluoride.

Side Effects

Mouthwashes are usually well tolerated. Some people notice a temporary change in taste, mild mouth irritation or, with some products, light staining of teeth. Too much fluoride in children over a long time can cause white or brown spots on developing teeth (dental fluorosis).

Get urgent medical help if someone swallows a large amount, or if there is swelling of the mouth, face or throat or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Using fluoride mouthwash or toothpaste as directed and spitting it out is generally considered acceptable during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Ask your doctor or dentist before taking any fluoride supplement by mouth.

Precautions and Warnings

Keep out of the reach of children and supervise children while brushing or rinsing. Some mouthwashes contain alcohol, which may not suit people avoiding alcohol. Mouthwash does not replace brushing and flossing. See a dentist if you have pain, bleeding gums or ongoing sensitivity.

Overdose

Swallowing a large amount, especially by a child, may cause nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and diarrhoea, and in serious cases low calcium and heart problems. Give milk if available and seek medical help immediately.

Therapeutic Class

Dental anti-caries agent (fluoride preparation).

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Keep the bottle tightly closed.
