Indications

Natural eggshell membrane is the thin film found between the eggshell and the egg white. Dried and powdered, it is used as a joint health supplement for people with stiff or painful joints, mainly from osteoarthritis (wear and tear of the joints) of the knee and hip. Some clinical studies suggest it may reduce joint pain and stiffness within a few weeks, but the evidence is still limited, and it does not repair damaged cartilage.

How It Works

The membrane naturally contains collagen, glucosamine, chondroitin, hyaluronic acid, elastin and other proteins that are building blocks of cartilage and joint fluid. It is thought to calm inflammation in the joint and support the body's own repair of cartilage, though the exact mechanism is not fully understood.

Dosage and Administration

Take by mouth as directed on the label. A commonly used amount is 500 mg once a day, with or without food. Benefits, if any, may be noticed within 1 to 4 weeks; if there is no improvement after about 2 months, it is unlikely to help.

Interactions

No significant interactions with medicines are known. You can usually continue pain relievers such as Paracetamol prescribed by your doctor. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all supplements you take.

Contraindications

• Allergy to eggs or egg products.
• Allergy to any other ingredient of the product.

Side Effects

It is generally well tolerated. Mild stomach upset or bloating can occur. People with egg allergy may have allergic reactions, which can be serious.

Get urgent medical help if there is swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, wheezing or a widespread rash. Also see a doctor if a joint becomes hot, red and very swollen, or if you have fever with joint pain.

Pregnancy and Lactation

There is not enough safety information for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Avoid it unless a doctor advises otherwise.

Precautions and Warnings

Joint pain has many causes, including gout, rheumatoid arthritis and injuries, which need medical diagnosis. Keep up regular exercise and healthy weight, which are among the most effective treatments for osteoarthritis. Not intended for children.

Overdose

Taking more than directed is unlikely to be dangerous but may cause stomach upset. Seek medical advice if you feel unwell and take the pack with you.
