Oxiconazole
Indications
Oxiconazole is an antifungal applied to the skin to treat fungal infections such as ringworm of the body (tinea corporis), groin (tinea cruris) and feet (athlete's foot, tinea pedis), and pityriasis (tinea) versicolor, which causes pale or dark patches on the skin.
How It Works
Oxiconazole belongs to the azole group of antifungals. It stops fungi from making ergosterol, an essential part of their cell wall, so the fungal cells leak and die and the infection clears.
Dosage and Administration
Usually a 1% cream or lotion is used. Wash and dry the affected skin, then apply a thin layer to the area and a little of the surrounding skin once or twice daily. Ringworm usually needs about 2 weeks and athlete's foot about 1 month; versicolor is often treated once daily for 2 weeks. Keep using it for the full time even if the skin looks better. Wash your hands after use.
Interactions
Very little of the medicine is absorbed into the body, so interactions with tablets are unlikely. Avoid putting other creams on the same area at the same time unless your doctor advises it.
Contraindications
- Allergy to Oxiconazole or other azole antifungals.
- Not for use in the eyes, mouth or vagina.
Side Effects
Mild itching, burning, redness, dryness or irritation at the site of application may occur. Rarely, a skin allergy (contact dermatitis) develops.
Get urgent medical help if you notice severe swelling, blistering, spreading rash, or swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Only small amounts are absorbed, but use in pregnancy only if a doctor advises it. During breastfeeding, ask a doctor first and do not apply it to the breast area.
Precautions and Warnings
For external use only. Keep the area clean and dry, and avoid sharing towels or shoes. If there is no improvement after the full treatment period, see a doctor to confirm the diagnosis.
Overdose
Using too much on the skin is unlikely to cause harm beyond irritation. If it is swallowed, contact a doctor or poison centre.
