Oxytetracycline
Indications
Oxytetracycline is an antibiotic used for acne and rosacea, chest infections such as bronchitis and atypical pneumonia, chlamydia and some other sexually transmitted infections, and other infections caused by bacteria that respond to tetracyclines. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.
How It Works
It stops bacteria from making the proteins they need to grow and multiply, which allows the body to clear the infection.
Dosage and Administration
Adults and children over 12: usually 250 to 500 mg every 6 hours, as prescribed. Acne and rosacea: commonly 500 mg twice a day for several months, as prescribed. Take on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after food, with a full glass of water, while sitting or standing; do not lie down for 30 minutes after a dose. Complete the full course even if you feel better.
Interactions
- Milk and dairy products, antacids, and supplements containing calcium, iron, zinc or magnesium greatly reduce absorption; take them at least 2 to 3 hours apart.
- It can increase the effect of Warfarin.
- Taking it with Isotretinoin or Acitretin can raise pressure in the skull.
- It may reduce the effect of penicillin antibiotics.
Contraindications
Allergy to any tetracycline antibiotic, children under 12 (it stains developing teeth), pregnancy, breastfeeding, and severe kidney disease.
Side Effects
Common: nausea, stomach upset, diarrhoea, heartburn, increased sensitivity of the skin to sunlight, and thrush (yeast infection) of the mouth or vagina.
Get urgent medical help for severe or bloody diarrhoea, a severe headache with blurred or double vision, pain or difficulty when swallowing, yellowing of the skin or eyes, a severe skin rash or blistering, or signs of a serious allergic reaction.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Do not use in pregnancy; it can affect the baby's teeth and bones and may harm the mother's liver. Avoid while breastfeeding, as it passes into milk. Tell the doctor if you are pregnant, may be pregnant or are breastfeeding.
Precautions and Warnings
- Avoid strong sunlight and sunbeds; use sunscreen and cover up.
- Tell the doctor if you have kidney or liver disease, myasthenia gravis or lupus.
- Do not take out-of-date tablets, as they can harm the kidneys.
