Protein, Fat, Carbohydrate, Vitamin & Mineral
Indications
This is a complete, balanced nutrition formula that provides protein, fat, carbohydrate, vitamins and minerals. It is mainly made for children (usually from about 1 year of age) who are picky eaters, underweight, recovering from illness or not getting enough nutrition from their normal diet. It can be used as a supplement to meals or, under medical advice, as the main source of nutrition for a time.
How It Works
It supplies energy and the building blocks the body needs for growth: protein for muscles and tissues, fats and carbohydrates for energy, and vitamins and minerals (such as calcium, iron, zinc and vitamin D) for bones, blood and immunity. Some formulas also contain fibre or prebiotics to support digestion.
Dosage and Administration
Prepare and use as directed on the label, using the scoop provided and safe, boiled and cooled water. Typically 1 to 2 servings a day are given as a supplement, but the amount depends on age, weight and need, so follow your doctor's or dietitian's advice. Use prepared feeds within the time stated on the pack and throw away leftovers.
Interactions
No important interactions with medicines are expected. The minerals in it (for example calcium and iron) may reduce absorption of some antibiotics such as Ciprofloxacin or Tetracycline if taken at the same time; space them by about 2 hours.
Contraindications
- Infants under 1 year, unless a doctor advises it
- Galactosaemia (a rare inherited condition)
- Allergy to milk protein or any ingredient
- Not for use by injection or tube feeding unless directed by a health professional
Side Effects
It is usually well tolerated. Some children may have mild bloating, wind, loose stools or constipation when starting.
Get urgent medical help if there is swelling of the face or lips, difficulty breathing, widespread hives or repeated vomiting after drinking it, which may be a milk allergy.
Pregnancy and Lactation
This formula is designed for children. Pregnant or breastfeeding women who need extra nutrition should use a product made for them or ask their doctor.
Precautions and Warnings
It does not replace a balanced diet. Prepare it hygienically and in the right strength; too strong or too weak a mix can be harmful. Children with diabetes, kidney disease or special dietary needs should use it only under medical advice. Do not use if the tin is damaged or past its expiry date.
Overdose
Drinking too much may cause stomach upset, diarrhoea or unwanted weight gain. Long-term excessive use may lead to too much of some vitamins; follow the recommended servings.
Therapeutic Class
Nutritional supplement (complete paediatric nutrition formula).
Storage
Store the unopened tin below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Once opened, close tightly and use within the time stated on the pack, usually 3 to 4 weeks.
