About the Medicine

Tapinarof

Indications

Tapinarof 1% cream is a non steroid medicine applied to the skin to treat plaque psoriasis in adults and atopic dermatitis (eczema) in adults and children aged 2 years and older.

How It Works

Tapinarof activates a protein inside skin cells called the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR). This calms inflammation, lowers the activity of immune signals that drive psoriasis and eczema, helps restore the skin barrier and acts as an antioxidant. As a result, redness, scaling, thickness and itching improve.

Dosage and Administration

Apply a thin layer once a day to the affected skin only, and rub in gently, or as directed by your doctor. Wash your hands after applying, unless the hands are being treated. Do not apply to the eyes, mouth or inside the vagina. It is usually used for as long as advised by your doctor; improvement may take a few weeks.

Interactions

No important interactions with other medicines are known, as little is absorbed into the body. Avoid applying other creams, lotions or cosmetics on the same area at the same time unless your doctor advises it.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to Tapinarof or any ingredient of the cream.

Side Effects

The most common effect is folliculitis (small red bumps or pimples around hair follicles where the cream is applied). Others include itching, irritation or redness where applied, contact dermatitis, headache, and cold like symptoms such as a blocked or runny nose.

Get urgent medical help if you develop swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, or a severe, spreading or painful skin reaction with blisters or pus.

Pregnancy and Lactation

There is little information on use in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Use only if your doctor decides it is needed. If breastfeeding, do not apply to the nipple or areola to avoid the baby swallowing it.

Precautions and Warnings

For external use only. Do not apply to broken, infected or sunburnt skin. Stop and see your doctor if folliculitis or irritation is severe. Tell your doctor if your skin does not improve. It is not for use in children under 2 years.

Overdose

Overdose is unlikely when used on the skin. If the cream is swallowed, rinse the mouth and contact a doctor if symptoms occur.

Therapeutic Class

Topical aryl hydrocarbon receptor agonist; non steroid anti inflammatory for psoriasis and eczema.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Do not freeze. Keep the tube tightly closed.
