About the Medicine

Tila Jadeed [Madar, Mace Arillus, Nutmeg Nut]

Indications

Tila Jadeed is a Unani medicated oil (tila means a liniment for external use) containing madar (Calotropis, also called akanda), mace and nutmeg, often with other herbs. It is traditionally massaged onto the skin of the penis by men with weak erections, reduced sensation or premature ejaculation, with the aim of improving local blood flow and firmness. There is no good scientific evidence that it works for these problems, and it is not a substitute for medical assessment of sexual difficulties.

How It Works

Madar latex and the aromatic oils of nutmeg and mace are skin irritants and warming agents. Applied to the skin they cause a feeling of warmth and increased local blood flow (a rubefacient effect), which is the traditional basis for their use. They do not treat the underlying causes of erectile problems.

Dosage and Administration

For external use only. Do not swallow. Apply a few drops as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner, usually massaging gently onto the shaft of the penis and avoiding the tip (glans) and the urinary opening. Try a small amount on a small area first to check for irritation. Wash hands well after use and do not touch the eyes. Wash the oil off before sexual contact so that it does not irritate your partner.

Interactions

Interactions with medicines taken by mouth are unlikely. Oils can weaken latex condoms and make them more likely to break, so do not use it at the same time as condoms. Do not use it together with other creams or oils on the same area.

Contraindications

  • Broken, cracked, inflamed or infected skin on the genitals, or any genital sore.
  • Known allergy to any ingredient.
  • Women, children and use inside the body.

Side Effects

Burning, redness, itching, swelling and blistering of the skin can occur, because madar latex is a strong irritant. Allergic skin reactions are possible.

Get urgent medical help if severe burning, blistering or swelling develops, if the oil gets into the eyes (rinse immediately with plenty of clean water), if it is swallowed, or if an erection lasts more than 4 hours.

Pregnancy and Lactation

This product is intended for men only. It must not be used by women, including during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and should be washed off before contact with a pregnant partner.

Precautions and Warnings

Madar latex is poisonous if swallowed and can seriously damage the eyes. Keep the bottle well away from children. Erection problems can be an early sign of diabetes, heart disease or hormone problems, so it is wise to see a doctor. Stop using it if irritation develops.

Overdose

Applying too much increases the risk of burning and blistering; wash the area with soap and water. If any is swallowed, it may cause vomiting, diarrhoea and effects on the heart; seek emergency medical help immediately and take the bottle with you.

Therapeutic Class

Unani herbal topical oil (traditional male tonic)

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Keep the bottle tightly closed.
