About the Medicine

Arq Nankha

Indications

Arq Nankha is a Unani distilled herbal water (arq means distillate) made from ajwain, also called carom seed or nankhwah (Trachyspermum ammi). It is traditionally used for wind, bloating, indigestion, stomach cramps and colic, loss of appetite and mild nausea. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited, and it does not cure any disease.

How It Works

Ajwain seeds contain an aromatic oil rich in thymol. This oil is thought to stimulate the release of digestive juices, relax the muscles of the gut so that gas can pass more easily (a carminative effect), and have antimicrobial activity in laboratory studies. Distillation carries some of these aromatic compounds into the water.

Dosage and Administration

Take by mouth as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner, usually after meals, measuring each dose with the cup provided. For children, use only if the label gives a dose for their age. Do not exceed the stated amount.

Interactions

Serious interactions are not known at usual amounts. In theory, large amounts of ajwain could add to the effect of blood thinners such as Warfarin or Aspirin. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines and herbal products you use.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to ajwain or related plants such as cumin, fennel, coriander or celery.
  • Pregnancy, in medicinal amounts.

Side Effects

It is generally well tolerated. Heartburn, nausea or allergic reactions may occur occasionally.

Get urgent medical help if there is swelling of the face, lips or throat, or difficulty breathing. Also see a doctor promptly for severe or persistent tummy pain, repeated vomiting, vomiting blood, black stools, or tummy pain with fever.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Ajwain used in cooking is considered safe, but concentrated medicinal amounts have traditionally been linked with miscarriage and should be avoided in pregnancy. Ask a doctor before using it while breastfeeding.

Precautions and Warnings

Herbal remedies are not a substitute for medical care. Ongoing indigestion, weight loss, difficulty swallowing or tummy pain that keeps returning need a doctor's assessment. People with stomach ulcers or severe acid reflux should use it with care.

Overdose

Taking too much may cause heartburn, nausea and stomach upset. Seek medical advice if symptoms are severe and take the bottle with you.

Therapeutic Class

Unani herbal distillate (carminative and digestive)

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Keep the bottle tightly closed.
