Mupirocin
Indications
Mupirocin is an antibiotic for use on the skin and inside the nose. It is used for:
- Impetigo (a contagious skin infection with crusted sores).
- Infected small cuts, grazes, insect bites and eczema, and infected hair roots (folliculitis) or boils.
- Nasal ointment: clearing Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, including MRSA, from the nose, for example before surgery or to stop repeated infections.
How It Works
Mupirocin blocks an enzyme bacteria need to make proteins, which stops them growing. It works well against the bacteria that commonly cause skin infections, Staphylococcus and Streptococcus.
Dosage and Administration
Skin: wash and dry the area, then apply a thin layer up to three times a day, usually for 5 to 10 days. You may cover it with a dressing. Wash your hands before and after use.
Nose: put a small amount (about the size of a match head) on the inside of each nostril two or three times a day for 5 days, then press the sides of the nose together to spread it, or as prescribed.
Do not use for longer than 10 days unless your doctor advises.
Interactions
No important interactions with other medicines are known. Do not mix with other creams or ointments on the same area at the same time.
Contraindications
Allergy to mupirocin or any ingredient of the product.
Side Effects
Burning, stinging, itching, redness or dryness where it is applied. Nasal use may cause a runny nose or irritation.
Get urgent medical help if you have a widespread rash, swelling of the face, lips or throat, or difficulty breathing. Also see a doctor if you develop severe or bloody diarrhoea, which is rare.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Very little is absorbed through the skin, so harm is not expected; use during pregnancy only if your doctor or pharmacist advises. If applying to a cracked nipple while breastfeeding, wash it off well before feeding.
Precautions and Warnings
- For external use only; keep away from the eyes.
- Some ointments contain polyethylene glycol; do not use on large open wounds or burns, especially if you have kidney problems.
- Using it for too long can make bacteria resistant and allow fungal infection; follow the course given.
- See a doctor if there is no improvement after 3 to 5 days, or if the infection spreads or you develop fever.
Overdose
Using too much on the skin is unlikely to cause harm. If swallowed, it may cause stomach upset; seek medical advice.
