About the Medicine

Potassium Guaiacol Sulphonate

Indications

Potassium Guaiacol Sulphonate (also called Sulfogaiacol) is an expectorant used in cough syrups to help loosen thick mucus (phlegm) in chest colds, bronchitis and other conditions with a wet, productive cough. It is often combined with other ingredients in cough medicines.

How It Works

It is thought to increase the amount and thin the consistency of the fluid in the airways. Thinner mucus is easier to cough up, which helps clear the chest and makes coughing more productive.

Dosage and Administration

Take by mouth exactly as directed on the label or by your doctor or pharmacist, as the strength varies between products and combinations. Use the measuring cup or spoon provided. Drink plenty of fluids to help loosen mucus. Do not give to young children unless a doctor advises, and do not use for more than 7 days without medical advice.

Interactions

No major interactions are known for this ingredient alone. However, many cough syrups also contain antihistamines, decongestants or cough suppressants, which can interact with sedatives, alcohol, MAO inhibitors and blood pressure medicines. Check all ingredients and avoid taking two cough or cold products together.

Contraindications

Do not use if you are allergic to Potassium Guaiacol Sulphonate or any ingredient. People on a potassium-restricted diet or with severe kidney disease should ask a doctor first.

Side Effects

Side effects are uncommon and usually mild, such as nausea, stomach upset, vomiting or diarrhoea. Rarely, a skin rash or allergic reaction may occur.

Get urgent medical help if you develop swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing or a widespread rash. See a doctor if the cough lasts more than a week, comes back, or comes with high fever, chest pain, shortness of breath or coughing up blood.

Pregnancy and Lactation

There is limited safety information in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Ask your doctor or pharmacist before use, especially for combination products.

Precautions and Warnings

Do not use for a chronic cough from smoking, asthma or emphysema unless a doctor advises. Some syrups contain sugar or alcohol, which matters for people with diabetes or those avoiding alcohol. Check the label for other active ingredients.

Overdose

Overdose may cause nausea, vomiting and stomach upset. In combination syrups, the other ingredients may be more dangerous in overdose. Seek medical advice, especially if a child has swallowed a large amount.

Therapeutic Class

Expectorant (cough preparation).
