Sanoon Babla
Indications
Sanoon Babla is a traditional Unani tooth powder (sanoon means tooth powder) based on the bark of the babul or babla tree (Acacia nilotica), often combined with other herbs and minerals. It is traditionally used to clean the teeth, strengthen the gums, reduce bleeding or swollen gums, and freshen bad breath. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited, and it does not replace dental treatment for gum disease (pyorrhoea), tooth decay or tooth abscess.
How It Works
Babul bark is rich in tannins, which are astringent: they tighten the gum tissue and reduce oozing and bleeding. The bark also has mild antimicrobial activity against some mouth bacteria. The fine powder helps remove food debris and plaque from the tooth surface when rubbed or brushed.
Dosage and Administration
For use in the mouth only. Use as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner: usually a small amount is rubbed gently on the teeth and gums with a fingertip or soft toothbrush, morning and night, and then the mouth is rinsed well with water. Do not swallow the powder. Children should use it only under adult supervision.
Interactions
No important interactions with medicines are known, because very little is absorbed when it is used in the mouth and rinsed out. Tell your dentist or doctor about any other mouth products or medicines you use.
Contraindications
- Known allergy to babul (acacia) or any other ingredient.
- Open sores or ulcers in the mouth that are made worse by the powder.
Side Effects
Possible side effects include a burning or stinging feeling on the gums, temporary dryness or tightness in the mouth, staining of the teeth with long-term use and, rarely, allergic reactions. Brushing too hard with any powder can wear down tooth enamel and irritate the gums.
Get urgent medical help if you notice swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing, or a painful facial swelling with fever, which may mean a dental abscess.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Used in the mouth and rinsed out, it is unlikely to cause harm during pregnancy or breastfeeding, but there are no formal safety studies. Ask a doctor or dentist if unsure. Gum bleeding is common in pregnancy and should be checked by a dentist.
Precautions and Warnings
Gums that bleed often, loose teeth, persistent bad breath or tooth pain should be checked by a dentist. Herbal tooth powders often do not contain fluoride, so use a fluoride toothpaste as well unless your dentist advises otherwise. Brush gently.
Overdose
Swallowing a small amount by accident is unlikely to be harmful but may cause stomach upset. If a child swallows a large amount, seek medical advice.
Therapeutic Class
