Pyrantel Pamoate
Indications
Pyrantel Pamoate is a deworming medicine. It treats intestinal worm infections caused by roundworm, pinworm (threadworm) and hookworm, in adults and children.
How It Works
Pyrantel paralyses the worms by acting on their nerve and muscle system. The paralysed worms lose their grip on the gut wall and are passed out in the stool. Very little of the medicine is absorbed into the body.
Dosage and Administration
The dose is based on body weight: commonly 10 mg of pyrantel per kg as a single dose, up to a maximum of 1 g, or as directed on the label or by your doctor. For pinworm, the dose is usually repeated after 2 weeks. For hookworm, doses may be given for up to 3 days. Children's doses must be measured by weight as directed on the label or as prescribed. It can be taken at any time, with or without food; no fasting or laxative is needed. Shake the suspension well before use. Household members may need treating at the same time for pinworm.
Interactions
Do not use together with Piperazine, as they work against each other. It may raise Theophylline levels. Tell your doctor about other medicines you take.
Contraindications
- Allergy to pyrantel or any ingredient
- Use with care in liver disease
- Children under 1 year (or under 2 years for some products) unless advised by a doctor
