Cefuroxime Axetil
Indications
Cefuroxime axetil is an antibiotic taken by mouth for bacterial infections of the throat and tonsils, ears, sinuses and chest (such as bronchitis and pneumonia), urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, uncomplicated gonorrhoea and early Lyme disease. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.
How It Works
It is a cephalosporin antibiotic. It damages the cell wall that bacteria need to survive, so the bacteria die.
Dosage and Administration
Adults: usually 250 mg twice a day; 500 mg twice a day for more severe chest infections; 125 to 250 mg twice a day for urinary tract infections. Treatment usually lasts 5 to 10 days, as prescribed. Children: dose is based on weight, as prescribed. Take after food, which helps the body absorb it, at evenly spaced times. Finish the full course even if you feel better.
Interactions
- Antacids and acid-reducing medicines such as Famotidine and Omeprazole may lower absorption.
- Probenecid raises cefuroxime levels.
- It may increase the effect of Warfarin.
- It may make the oral typhoid vaccine less effective, and in rare cases may reduce the effect of the contraceptive pill, especially with vomiting or diarrhoea.
Contraindications
Allergy to cefuroxime or any cephalosporin, and a history of a severe allergic reaction (such as anaphylaxis) to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics.
Side Effects
Common: diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain, headache, dizziness and thrush (yeast infection).
Get urgent medical help for a serious allergic reaction (swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, widespread rash), severe or bloody diarrhoea, a blistering or peeling skin rash, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or unusual bleeding or bruising.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Cephalosporins are widely used in pregnancy and are not known to harm the baby; use only when a doctor prescribes it. Small amounts pass into breast milk; it is generally considered compatible with breastfeeding, but watch the baby for diarrhoea, thrush or rash.
Precautions and Warnings
- Tell the doctor about any past allergy to penicillin or other antibiotics.
- The dose may need lowering in severe kidney disease.
- Long or repeated use can lead to resistant infections or thrush.
Overdose
Overdose may cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Very high levels can cause seizures, especially in people with kidney disease. Seek medical help.
Therapeutic Class
Second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic.
Storage
Store tablets below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. After mixing, keep the suspension in a fridge at 2 to 8°C and use it within the time stated on the pack (usually 10 days).
