Red Clover Isoflavones
Indications
Red Clover Isoflavones is a supplement made from the red clover plant (Trifolium pratense). It is used mainly to ease menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes and night sweats, and sometimes to support bone health and heart health after menopause. Studies show at most a small benefit for hot flushes, and results are mixed. It is not a replacement for hormone treatment prescribed by a doctor.
How It Works
Isoflavones, such as biochanin A, formononetin, genistein and daidzein, are plant compounds that act like a weak form of the hormone oestrogen (phytoestrogens). After menopause, when the body's own oestrogen falls, they may partly make up for it and so reduce some symptoms.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label, usually once daily with water. Benefits, if any, may take 4 to 12 weeks to appear. Do not take more than the recommended amount.
Interactions
- It may increase the effect of blood thinners such as Warfarin, Clopidogrel or Aspirin, raising the risk of bleeding.
- It may interfere with hormone treatments, including Tamoxifen, Letrozole, hormone replacement therapy and birth control pills.
- It may affect the breakdown of some medicines in the liver. Tell your doctor about all medicines you take.
Contraindications
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- Breast, womb or ovarian cancer, endometriosis, fibroids, or other hormone sensitive conditions.
- Bleeding disorders, or within two weeks before surgery.
- Allergy to red clover or any ingredient.
- Children.
Side Effects
It is usually well tolerated. Possible effects include headache, nausea, muscle aches, breast tenderness, rash and, rarely, spotting or vaginal bleeding.
Get urgent medical help if you have signs of a serious allergic reaction (swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, widespread rash), unusual bleeding or bruising, or vaginal bleeding after menopause.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, because its hormone like effects could affect the baby.
Precautions and Warnings
- Any vaginal bleeding after menopause must be checked by a doctor.
- Women with a family history of hormone sensitive cancer should talk to their doctor before use.
- Stop use if you notice a new breast lump and see a doctor.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely to be dangerous but may increase side effects such as nausea, headache or bleeding risk. Seek medical advice if a large amount has been taken.
