Hyoscine Butyl Bromide
What It Is Used For
Hyoscine butylbromide relaxes the muscles of the stomach, gut and bladder. It relieves cramping pain and spasms, for example in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), stomach cramps, period cramps and bladder spasms.
How to Take It
Adults and children aged 12 or over: usually 10 mg to 20 mg up to 4 times a day; do not take more than 80 mg a day. Children aged 6 to 11: 10 mg up to 3 times a day. Swallow tablets whole with water. Injections are given only by a doctor or nurse.
Who Should Not Take It
Do not take it if you are allergic to hyoscine, have narrow-angle glaucoma, myasthenia gravis, an enlarged prostate with difficulty passing urine, a blocked or very swollen bowel (megacolon), or a fast heart rate.
Side Effects
Usually mild: dry mouth, constipation, fast heartbeat, blurred vision and difficulty passing urine. Get medical help straight away if you have a painful red eye with loss of vision, or signs of an allergic reaction.
Precautions
See a doctor first, rather than treating yourself, if you have stomach pain with fever, blood in your stools, vomiting, unexplained weight loss, severe or worsening pain, or if you are over 45 and your symptoms are new. Tell your doctor if you have heart disease or an overactive thyroid.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Avoid in pregnancy and while breastfeeding unless your doctor advises it.
