Riboflavin
Indications
Riboflavin (vitamin B2) is used to prevent and treat riboflavin deficiency, which can cause cracks and sores at the corners of the mouth, a sore red tongue, sore lips and eye irritation. Deficiency is more likely with poor diet, heavy alcohol use and some long-term illnesses. Doctors sometimes use higher doses to help prevent migraine. It is a common part of B-complex and multivitamin products.
How It Works
Riboflavin helps enzymes that release energy from food. It also supports healthy skin, eyes and nerves, and helps the body use other B vitamins.
Dosage and Administration
- Adults, deficiency or supplement: usually 5 to 30 mg a day, often in divided doses, or as the doctor advises.
- Migraine prevention: only at the dose prescribed by a doctor.
- Children: as prescribed.
Take by mouth, preferably with food, which helps absorption.
Interactions
No important interactions are known at normal doses. Some medicines, such as Chlorpromazine, Amitriptyline and Probenecid, and heavy alcohol use may lower riboflavin levels or increase the body's need for it.
Contraindications
Allergy to riboflavin or any ingredient of the product.
Side Effects
Usually well tolerated. It commonly turns urine bright yellow, which is harmless. High doses may occasionally cause diarrhoea or passing more urine. Get urgent medical help if you have signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing or a widespread rash.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Safe at normal recommended doses during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Avoid high doses unless a doctor advises them.
Precautions and Warnings
Yellow urine is expected and not a reason to stop. If mouth sores or a sore tongue do not improve after a few weeks, see a doctor, as other causes may need checking.
Overdose
Riboflavin has very low toxicity because the body does not absorb large amounts and passes the extra in urine. If a large amount has been taken and you feel unwell, seek medical advice.
Therapeutic Class
Vitamin B (water-soluble vitamin).
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Riboflavin breaks down in light, so keep it in the original pack.
