Natural Refreshing Halal Sharbat
Indications
This is a natural, halal herbal sharbat: a concentrated sweet syrup made with sugar, fruit and herb extracts, and flower waters (such as rose and kewra), which is mixed with water or milk to make a cooling drink. It is a food and refreshment product, not a medicine. It is traditionally enjoyed in hot weather and during Ramadan to refresh the body and help replace fluids after fasting.
How It Works
When diluted, the syrup provides water, sugar for quick energy, and a pleasant flavour that encourages people to drink more fluids. In Unani tradition, ingredients such as rose and other herbs are considered cooling. It does not have proven medicinal effects.
Dosage and Administration
Use as directed on the label. It is usually mixed with a glass of chilled water or milk according to taste; it can also be added to desserts. Do not drink it undiluted.
Interactions
No interactions with medicines are known. Because it is high in sugar, people taking diabetes medicines should count it as part of their sugar intake.
Contraindications
- People with uncontrolled diabetes should avoid it or use it only in small amounts after asking a doctor.
- Known allergy to any ingredient listed on the label.
Side Effects
It is safe for most people as a drink. Too much can add many calories, raise blood sugar and contribute to tooth decay and weight gain.
Get urgent medical help if you have signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the lips or face, hives or difficulty breathing, or if a person with diabetes becomes very thirsty, confused or drowsy after drinking large amounts.
Pregnancy and Lactation
It can be enjoyed in moderate amounts during pregnancy and breastfeeding as part of a balanced diet. Women with diabetes in pregnancy (gestational diabetes) should limit or avoid it.
Precautions and Warnings
- It is high in sugar: limit intake if you have diabetes or are overweight, and brush your teeth regularly.
- Some versions contain added colours; check the label if you are sensitive to them.
- It is not a treatment for dehydration due to diarrhoea; use oral rehydration salts instead.
Overdose
Drinking very large amounts may cause high blood sugar, stomach upset or loose stools. In people with diabetes, monitor blood sugar and seek medical advice if it is very high.
Therapeutic Class
