Chloroxylenol
Indications
Chloroxylenol is an antiseptic and disinfectant liquid. It is used, after diluting with water, to clean minor cuts, scratches, grazes and insect bites, for personal hygiene and bathing, to clean the skin before minor procedures, and to disinfect household surfaces, floors, clothes and baby items.
How It Works
Chloroxylenol belongs to the phenol family of germ killers. It damages the outer wall of bacteria and some fungi, causing their contents to leak out, so they die. It works best against many common skin bacteria but is less effective against some germs.
Dosage and Administration
Always dilute as directed on the label; the strength needed differs for wounds, bathing, and surface cleaning. For skin use, the diluted solution is usually applied with cotton or cloth and can be rinsed off afterwards. Do not use the concentrate directly on skin. It is for external use only and must never be swallowed.
Interactions
Do not mix with other cleaning products, especially bleach. Soap and some other chemicals may reduce its effect. Avoid using it at the same time as other skin antiseptics on the same area unless advised.
Contraindications
Do not use if you are allergic to Chloroxylenol or any ingredient in the product, on large open wounds, deep or puncture wounds, serious burns, in the eyes or ears, or inside the body.
Side Effects
When diluted correctly it is usually well tolerated. It can cause skin irritation, redness, dryness or itching, especially when used too strong or too often. Allergic skin reactions are possible.
Get urgent medical help if the liquid is swallowed (especially by a child), gets into the eyes and causes pain or blurred vision, or if you develop swelling of the face, a widespread rash or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Diluted use on the skin is generally considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Do not apply to the nipple area before feeding, and rinse off if used there.
Precautions and Warnings
Keep the bottle tightly closed and out of the reach of children; it can be poisonous if swallowed. Avoid contact with eyes. Do not use for long periods on the same wound; see a doctor if a wound is deep, dirty, infected or not healing. Use with extra care on newborn skin.
Overdose
Swallowing the concentrate can cause burning of the mouth and throat, vomiting, drowsiness and breathing problems. Do not make the person vomit; rinse the mouth and go to a hospital immediately. For eye contact, rinse with clean water for at least 15 minutes.
Therapeutic Class
Topical antiseptic and disinfectant (phenol derivative).
