Sharbat Santara
Indications
Sharbat Santara is a Unani syrup prepared mainly from orange (santara) juice or peel with sugar. It is traditionally used as a cooling, refreshing drink to relieve thirst and burning sensation, to support appetite and digestion, to ease nausea, and as a supportive drink during fever and hot weather. Some products in this group are also used for their mild urine-alkalising effect. Scientific evidence for these traditional uses is limited.
How It Works
Orange provides citric acid, natural sugars, flavonoids and a small amount of vitamin C. In Unani theory it is considered cooling and refreshing. Citrate from citrus fruits is converted in the body to bicarbonate, which can make the urine less acidic.
Dosage and Administration
Use as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner. A common way to take a sharbat is to mix the stated amount (often 2 to 4 teaspoons) in a glass of water, one to three times daily. Shake the bottle well before use.
Interactions
No important interactions are known. If you take medicines for diabetes, or medicines whose effect depends on urine acidity, tell your doctor or pharmacist before using it regularly.
Contraindications
- Allergy to citrus fruits or any ingredient in the product.
- People with poorly controlled diabetes should avoid it because of its high sugar content unless advised by a doctor.
Side Effects
It is usually well tolerated. Possible effects include heartburn or acidity in sensitive people, a rise in blood sugar, and tooth decay with frequent use. Allergic reactions are rare.
Get urgent medical help if you develop swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, or a severe rash.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Orange-based drinks are generally considered safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding in normal amounts. Ask your doctor before regular use of any herbal product, especially if you have gestational diabetes.
Precautions and Warnings
- Contains a lot of sugar: diabetics should use with caution.
- Rinse the mouth after use to protect teeth.
- For fever, nausea or digestive problems that last more than a few days, see a doctor.
- Use in young children as advised by a practitioner.
Overdose
