About the Medicine

Benzyl Benzoate

Indications

Benzyl benzoate is applied to the skin to treat scabies (an itchy skin infestation caused by tiny mites) and head and body lice.

How It Works

It is toxic to scabies mites and lice and kills them on contact. Only a small amount is absorbed through the skin.

Dosage and Administration

For use on the skin only. Scabies, adults: after a bath, dry the skin and apply the lotion (usually 25%) over the whole body from the neck down, including between the fingers and toes, under the nails and the genital area. Leave it on for 24 hours, then wash it off. A second application is often advised, as directed by the doctor or the product leaflet. Children and infants: a diluted lotion is used, only as prescribed. Lice: apply to the affected hair and scalp and wash off as directed.

Everyone in the household and close contacts should be treated at the same time. Wash clothes, towels and bedding in hot water after treatment.

Interactions

No important interactions with other medicines are known. Do not use other creams or lotions on the treated skin at the same time unless advised.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to benzyl benzoate.
  • Broken, raw or badly inflamed skin.
  • Do not apply to the face, eyes, mouth or inside the nose.

Side Effects

Burning or stinging when applied, skin irritation, redness or rash may occur. Itching can continue for 2 to 4 weeks after successful treatment; this does not always mean the treatment has failed. Get urgent medical help if there is a severe allergic reaction (swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing) or if the product is swallowed.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Use during pregnancy only if a doctor advises it. If breastfeeding, do not apply it to the breasts, or wash it off before feeding, and follow your doctor's advice.

Precautions and Warnings

Avoid contact with the eyes; if it gets in, rinse well with plenty of water. Do not apply more often than directed, as this increases skin irritation. Wash your hands after use unless the hands are being treated.

Overdose

Applying too much can irritate the skin; wash it off with soap and water. If swallowed, it can cause serious effects, including seizures; seek emergency medical help immediately.

Therapeutic Class

Scabicide and pediculicide (medicine for scabies and lice).

Storage

Store below 30°C, away from light and out of the reach of children. Keep the bottle tightly closed.
