Allantoin
Indications
Allantoin is a skin soothing and healing ingredient used in creams, gels and ointments. It is found in scar gels (often with onion extract), moisturisers, products for dry, rough or cracked skin, nappy rash creams, and preparations for minor cuts, burns and skin irritation. In scar gels it is used to help improve the look, softness and colour of old and new scars.
How It Works
Allantoin softens and loosens the outer layer of dead skin cells (a mild keratolytic effect) and helps the skin hold water, so the skin feels smoother. It is thought to calm irritation and encourage healthy new skin cells to grow, supporting healing. In scar gels it works together with other ingredients to help flatten and soften scars over time. Evidence for scar improvement is modest.
Dosage and Administration
Use as directed on the label. Scar gels are usually massaged gently into the scar 3 to 4 times a day for several weeks to months, on fully healed skin only. Moisturising and soothing creams are applied thinly to the affected area as often as needed.
- Clean and dry the skin before applying.
- Do not apply to open wounds unless the product is designed for that.
Interactions
No significant interactions are known. Avoid applying other strong skin products (for example acids or retinoids) to the same area at the same time unless advised.
Contraindications
Allergy to allantoin or any ingredient in the product, such as onion extract, fragrance or preservatives.
Side Effects
Allantoin is very well tolerated. Rarely, redness, itching, burning or a rash may occur, usually due to other ingredients in the product.
Get urgent medical help if you develop swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, or a severe spreading rash.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Allantoin applied to the skin is considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Avoid applying to the nipple area while breastfeeding, and check the other ingredients with a pharmacist.
Precautions and Warnings
