Selvin

Indications

This is a combination of Salajeet (Shilajit, also called mineral pitch: a sticky, tar-like substance that seeps from rocks in high mountains) and Red Sage (Salvia miltiorrhiza, known as Danshen, a herb root used in traditional medicine). In Unani medicine it is traditionally used as a tonic for general weakness and fatigue, for male sexual weakness, and to support stamina. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited, and it is not a proven treatment for erectile problems or infertility.

How It Works

Shilajit contains fulvic acid, minerals and other organic compounds, and is believed in traditional medicine to restore energy and strength. Red sage root contains tanshinones and salvianolic acids, which are thought to improve blood flow and have antioxidant effects. How the combination works in people is not well studied.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner, usually with milk or water after meals. Do not take more than advised.

Interactions

• Red sage (Danshen) can strongly increase the effect of Warfarin and other blood thinners (such as Clopidogrel and Aspirin), raising the risk of bleeding. Do not combine them without a doctor's advice.
• It may increase the effect of Digoxin and of blood pressure medicines.
• Shilajit may lower blood sugar; people taking diabetes medicines should monitor their sugar levels.

Contraindications

• Bleeding disorders, or taking blood-thinning medicines.
• Gout or high uric acid, as Shilajit may raise uric acid.
• Pregnancy, breastfeeding and children.
• Known allergy to any ingredient.

Side Effects

Possible effects include stomach upset, itching, dizziness and headache. Red sage may increase bleeding tendency, such as easy bruising or nosebleeds.

Get urgent medical help if you have unusual bleeding or bruising, blood in the urine or stool, chest pain, a fast or irregular heartbeat, an erection lasting more than four hours, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. This product is not intended for these situations, and its safety has not been established.

Precautions and Warnings

• Sexual weakness can be a sign of diabetes, heart disease or hormone problems; see a doctor for a check-up.
• Stop taking it at least two weeks before planned surgery or dental work.
• Raw or poorly purified Shilajit can contain heavy metals and fungi. Buy only from reliable makers.

Overdose

Taking too much may cause stomach upset and increase the risk of bleeding. Seek medical help if a large amount has been taken or if bleeding occurs.
