Qurs Salajeet
Indications
Qurs Salajeet is a Unani tablet (qurs means tablet) made mainly from purified Salajeet (Shilajit, also called mineral pitch: a sticky, tar-like substance that seeps from rocks in high mountains), often with other herbs. It is traditionally used as a tonic for general weakness and tiredness, for male sexual weakness, and to support the kidneys and bladder. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited, and it is not a proven treatment for any specific disease.
How It Works
Shilajit contains fulvic acid, minerals and other organic compounds. In Unani and Ayurvedic tradition it is believed to restore energy, strengthen the body and improve stamina. Small studies suggest it may have antioxidant effects, but how it works in people is not well understood.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner, usually with milk or water after meals. Do not take more than advised.
Interactions
- It may lower blood sugar: people taking diabetes medicines should monitor their sugar levels.
- It may lower blood pressure and add to the effect of blood pressure medicines.
- It may contain iron and other minerals; tell your doctor if you take iron supplements or have iron overload.
Contraindications
- Gout or high uric acid, as Shilajit may raise uric acid.
- Iron overload conditions such as haemochromatosis or thalassaemia with high iron.
- Pregnancy, breastfeeding and children.
- Known allergy to any ingredient.
Side Effects
Most people tolerate it well. Possible effects include stomach upset, a feeling of heat in the body, dizziness, itching and skin rash.
Get urgent medical help if you have a fast or irregular heartbeat, severe dizziness or fainting, swelling or severe pain in a joint, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, because its safety has not been established.
Precautions and Warnings
- Weakness or sexual problems can be signs of diabetes, heart disease, anaemia or hormone problems. See a doctor for a check-up.
- Raw or poorly purified Shilajit may contain heavy metals and fungi. Buy only from reliable makers.
- People with heart disease or low blood pressure should ask a doctor first.
Overdose
Taking too much may cause stomach upset, dizziness or low blood pressure. Contact a doctor if a large amount has been taken, especially by a child.
