About the Medicine

Paracetamol

What It Is Used For

Paracetamol (also called acetaminophen) lowers fever and relieves mild to moderate pain, such as headache, toothache, period pain, body ache, and pain after vaccination. It does not reduce swelling.

How to Take It

Adults and children over 12: usually 500 mg to 1 g (1 to 2 tablets of 500 mg) every 4 to 6 hours when needed. Do not take more than 4 g (8 tablets of 500 mg) in 24 hours, and leave at least 4 hours between doses. People who are underweight, drink alcohol regularly or have liver problems need a lower limit, so ask your doctor.

Children: use the syrup, suspension or drops. The dose depends on the child's weight, so follow the doctor's advice or the leaflet exactly and use the measuring cup or dropper provided.

Extended-release tablets (665 mg) are taken differently, usually 2 tablets every 8 hours. Swallow them whole.

Who Should Not Take It

Do not take it if you are allergic to paracetamol or have severe liver disease.

Side Effects

Side effects are rare at normal doses. Rarely it can cause skin rash, or very rarely serious skin reactions or blood problems. Stop taking it and see a doctor if you get a rash, peeling skin or blisters.

Precautions

Many cold, flu and pain medicines also contain paracetamol. Check labels so you do not take two at once. Talk to a doctor if fever lasts more than 3 days or pain lasts more than 5 days (3 days for children).

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Paracetamol is commonly used in pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Use the lowest dose that works for the shortest time, and ask your doctor if you need it often.

Interactions

Tell your doctor if you take warfarin, as regular paracetamol can increase its effect. Some epilepsy medicines and regular alcohol use make liver damage more likely.

Overdose

Taking too much paracetamol can cause serious liver damage, even if the person feels well at first. Go to a hospital immediately if too much has been taken.

Storage

Store below 30°C, away from light and moisture, and out of the reach of children.
