About the Medicine

Habb-E Tinkar

Indications

Habb-E Tinkar is a Unani pill (habb means pill) whose key ingredient is tinkar (borax, purified sodium borate), combined with herbs. It is traditionally used for indigestion, wind (gas), bloating, loss of appetite and mild constipation. Some formulas are also used traditionally for painful periods. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited.

How It Works

In Unani medicine, purified borax and the accompanying herbs (often aromatic and mildly laxative herbs) are believed to warm the stomach, improve digestion, relieve wind and help the bowels move. Borax is a mineral salt that can be harmful in larger amounts, so the dose in such pills is small and must not be exceeded.

Dosage and Administration

Take only as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner, usually after meals with water. Use for short periods only. Do not take more than advised and do not use it for long periods without advice.

Interactions

  • If the formula contains laxative herbs, long-term use may lower potassium and interact with Digoxin, diuretics and heart rhythm medicines.
  • It may reduce the absorption of other medicines taken at the same time; take them a few hours apart.
  • Tell your doctor about all medicines you take.

Contraindications

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Children, unless a practitioner advises it.
  • Kidney disease, because borax is removed from the body by the kidneys.
  • Bowel blockage, severe or unexplained stomach pain, or stomach ulcer.
  • Known allergy to any ingredient.

Side Effects

Possible effects include nausea, stomach upset, loose stools and cramps. Too much borax over time can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, skin rash with peeling, hair loss and kidney problems.

Get urgent medical help if you have repeated vomiting, severe diarrhoea, a red peeling rash, fits (seizures), drowsiness or confusion, reduced urine, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Do not use during pregnancy, as borax may harm the unborn baby, or during breastfeeding, because its safety is not established.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Borax is a potent substance: never exceed the advised dose, and keep the pills well away from children.
  • See a doctor if indigestion is persistent, or if you have weight loss, difficulty swallowing, vomiting or black stools.
  • Use only products from reliable makers.

Overdose

Borax poisoning can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, a red skin rash, seizures, kidney damage and collapse, and is especially dangerous in children. Seek emergency medical help immediately if more than the advised dose has been taken.

Therapeutic Class

Unani herbo-mineral preparation (digestive and carminative).

Storage
