Kusta Qalyee [Calcined Stannum]
Indications
Kusta Qalyee is a Unani mineral preparation made from calcined stannum (tin that has been processed by repeated heating with herbs into a fine ash, called a kushta). In Unani medicine it is traditionally used for male sexual weakness, premature ejaculation, involuntary loss of semen (spermatorrhoea) and general debility. These uses are based on tradition; scientific evidence for its effectiveness and long-term safety is very limited.
How It Works
In Unani medicine, kushtas are believed to be quickly absorbed and to strengthen the body and the reproductive organs. There is little modern research on how calcined tin acts in the human body, and the amount of metal absorbed is not well known.
Dosage and Administration
Take only as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner, usually in very small amounts with milk, butter or honey. Do not exceed the advised dose and do not use it for long periods without supervision, because it is a metal-based preparation.
Interactions
Interactions with modern medicines have not been studied. Tell your doctor that you are taking a metal-based Unani preparation, especially if you take medicines for the heart, kidneys or blood pressure, or medicines for erectile problems such as Sildenafil.
Contraindications
- Kidney or liver disease.
- Women, especially during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- Children.
- Known allergy to any ingredient.
Side Effects
Possible effects include nausea, stomach upset, vomiting, loss of appetite and diarrhoea. Long-term or high-dose use of metal-based preparations may lead to build-up of metals in the body, which can affect the kidneys, liver and nerves.
Get urgent medical help if you have severe stomach pain, repeated vomiting, reduced urine, yellowing of the skin or eyes, numbness or weakness, confusion, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. This product is meant for adult men and metal-based preparations may harm the baby.
Precautions and Warnings
- Sexual problems can be caused by diabetes, heart disease, hormone problems, medicines, stress or anxiety. See a doctor for a proper check-up; effective, tested treatments are available.
- Traditional metal preparations from unreliable sources have been found to contain lead, mercury or arsenic. Use only products from licensed makers.
- Do not combine it with other kushtas or metal-based remedies.
Overdose
An overdose may cause severe stomach upset, vomiting and diarrhoea, and repeated high doses may cause metal poisoning. Seek medical help immediately if a large amount has been taken, especially by a child.
Therapeutic Class
Unani mineral preparation (kushta; tonic for male sexual weakness).
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Keep the container tightly closed.
