Collagen Peptide & Others
Indications
Collagen peptide supplements contain small pieces of collagen protein (hydrolysed collagen) taken from animal or fish sources, usually combined with other nutrients such as vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, biotin or minerals (check the label for the exact ingredients). They are used to support skin elasticity and hydration, healthy hair and nails, and joint comfort. Some studies suggest modest benefits for skin and joint symptoms, but the evidence is still limited.
How It Works
Collagen is the main structural protein in skin, bones, cartilage and tendons. Hydrolysed collagen is broken down into small peptides and amino acids that are easily absorbed. These may provide building blocks and signals that encourage the body to make its own collagen. Vitamin C is needed by the body to form collagen.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label, usually once a day. Powders are mixed with water, juice or another drink. Results, if any, usually take several weeks of regular use to appear.
Interactions
No important interactions with medicines are known. Check the label for added vitamins or minerals, and avoid taking several supplements with the same ingredients together. Tell your doctor about all supplements you take.
Contraindications
- Allergy to fish, shellfish, eggs or bovine (cow) products, depending on the collagen source shown on the label.
- Allergy to any other ingredient of the product.
Side Effects
It is usually well tolerated. Some people may notice a feeling of fullness, bloating, heartburn, mild stomach upset or an unpleasant taste.
Get urgent medical help if you have signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of the lips or face, hives or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Collagen is a food protein, but concentrated supplements and their added ingredients have not been well studied in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Ask a doctor before using them.
Precautions and Warnings
- People with kidney disease or on a protein-restricted diet should ask a doctor before use.
- Collagen supplements are not suitable for vegetarians or vegans, and halal status depends on the source; check the label.
- Joint pain or hair loss that is new or worsening should be checked by a doctor.
Overdose
No serious effects from overdose are known. Taking too much may cause stomach upset. Contact a doctor if you feel unwell after taking much more than the label advises.
