Mustakarista
Indications
Mustakarista (Mustakarishta) is an Ayurvedic fermented herbal liquid (arishta) whose main herb is Musta (nut grass, Cyperus rotundus), with spices such as ginger, black pepper, clove and fenugreek. It is traditionally used for indigestion, loss of appetite, gas and bloating, loose stools and diarrhoea, and as a digestive tonic. Scientific evidence for these traditional uses is limited, and it should not replace oral rehydration or medical care for diarrhoea.
How It Works
Musta is traditionally regarded as a digestive and anti-diarrhoeal herb; laboratory studies suggest it has mild antispasmodic (relieving gut cramps), anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial actions. The spices are thought to stimulate appetite and digestion. Because it is made by natural fermentation, the liquid contains a small amount of self-generated alcohol, which also helps extract and preserve the herbs.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by a registered Ayurvedic practitioner. For adults it is commonly taken after meals, mixed with an equal amount of water, usually twice a day. Shake well before use. Children should only take it if a practitioner advises a suitable amount.
Interactions
- Metronidazole, Tinidazole, Disulfiram and some antibiotics such as Cefoperazone: the alcohol content may cause flushing, vomiting and palpitations.
- Sleeping pills, sedatives and other medicines that cause drowsiness: alcohol may increase drowsiness.
- Insulin and diabetes tablets: the sugar content may affect blood sugar.
- Tell your doctor about all herbal products you take.
Contraindications
- Allergy to any ingredient.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding, unless a practitioner advises it.
- People who must avoid alcohol, such as those with liver disease, alcohol dependence or taking interacting medicines.
- Young children, unless advised by a practitioner.
Side Effects
Usually well tolerated in normal doses. Some people may have heartburn, a burning feeling in the stomach, constipation or mild drowsiness from the alcohol content.
Get urgent medical help if diarrhoea is severe or bloody, there are signs of dehydration (very dry mouth, little urine, dizziness), high fever, or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding because it contains alcohol and has not been well studied. Ask a doctor before use.
Precautions and Warnings
It contains self-generated alcohol; avoid driving if you feel drowsy, and take care in diabetes. For diarrhoea, drink oral rehydration solution and see a doctor if it lasts more than 2 days or affects a child or older person. Buy from reliable sources and store properly once opened.
Overdose
Taking large amounts may cause stomach upset, constipation, drowsiness or effects of alcohol. Seek medical help, especially if a child has swallowed it.
