Sulconazole Nitrate
Indications
Sulconazole Nitrate is an antifungal medicine applied to the skin. It is used to treat fungal skin infections such as ringworm of the body (tinea corporis), groin (tinea cruris, jock itch) and feet (tinea pedis, athlete's foot), and pityriasis (tinea) versicolor, which causes light or dark patches on the skin. It may also help some yeast (Candida) skin infections.
How It Works
Sulconazole is an imidazole antifungal. It blocks the fungus from making ergosterol, an essential part of its cell membrane. Without ergosterol the membrane becomes leaky and the fungus stops growing and dies. It also has some activity against certain bacteria found on the skin.
Dosage and Administration
For use on the skin only. Wash and dry the affected area, then gently rub a thin layer of the 1% cream or solution into the affected skin and a little of the surrounding skin once or twice daily, or as directed. Treatment usually lasts 3 weeks for ringworm and pityriasis versicolor, and about 4 weeks for athlete's foot. Keep using it for the full course even if the skin looks better. Wash your hands after use unless treating the hands.
Interactions
No important interactions with medicines taken by mouth are known, as very little is absorbed. Avoid applying other creams to the same area at the same time unless advised.
Contraindications
- Allergy to Sulconazole or other imidazole antifungals (such as Clotrimazole, Miconazole, Econazole), or to any ingredient.
- Not for use in or near the eyes, or inside the vagina.
Side Effects
Side effects are uncommon and usually mild: itching, burning, stinging, redness or dryness where it is applied.
Stop use and get urgent medical help if you develop severe irritation, blistering, a spreading rash, swelling of the face, lips or eyes, or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Very little is absorbed through the skin, but there is limited information in pregnancy; use only if your doctor advises, especially in the first 3 months. Ask your doctor before use while breastfeeding, and do not apply it to the breast area.
Precautions and Warnings
- For external use only. Avoid contact with the eyes, mouth and other mucous membranes.
- Keep the affected area clean and dry; wear loose cotton clothing and change socks daily for athlete's foot.

- See a doctor if there is no improvement after 4 weeks, or if irritation develops.
- Not usually used in children without medical advice.
