About the Medicine

Vitamin D3

What It Is Used For

Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) helps the body absorb calcium for strong bones and muscles. It is used to prevent and treat vitamin D deficiency, rickets in children and soft bones (osteomalacia), and alongside calcium in osteoporosis.

How to Take It

Daily maintenance for adults is usually 1,000 to 2,000 IU. Doctors give higher weekly or monthly doses to treat a proven deficiency. Take it with a meal that has some fat for better absorption.

Who Should Not Take It

Do not take it if you have high calcium in the blood, too much vitamin D already, or certain kidney stones.

Side Effects

Rare at normal doses. Too much over a long time can raise blood calcium and cause thirst, frequent urination, nausea, constipation, weakness and confusion.

Precautions

Do not take high doses for months without blood tests. Take extra care with kidney disease, sarcoidosis or a history of kidney stones.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Safe at the usual recommended daily dose; higher doses only on a doctor's advice.

Interactions

Thiazide diuretics (such as Hydrochlorothiazide) with vitamin D can raise calcium. Orlistat and some seizure medicines can lower vitamin D levels. Use extra care with Digoxin.

Storage

Store below 30°C away from light, out of the reach of children.
