About the Medicine

Multivitamin & Multimineral [a-Z Gold Preparation]

Indications

This A to Z type multivitamin and multimineral tablet is a daily supplement for adults who may not get enough vitamins and minerals from food, for example because of a poor or limited diet, recovery from illness, older age or extra needs from a busy, stressful life. It is a supplement and does not treat any specific disease.

How It Works

Each tablet provides small amounts of many vitamins (usually A, the B group, C, D, E and K) and minerals (such as Zinc, Iron, Calcium, Magnesium, Iodine and Selenium). These help with energy, blood formation, immunity, bones, skin and nerves. The exact contents vary between products, so check the label.

Dosage and Administration

Adults: usually 1 tablet a day with a meal, or as directed on the pack. Swallow with water. Do not take more than the stated dose. Not for children unless a children's formula is used or a doctor advises.

Interactions

  • Iron, Calcium, Magnesium and Zinc can reduce the absorption of some antibiotics (Ciprofloxacin, Doxycycline, Tetracycline), Levothyroxine and Alendronate. Keep a gap of at least 2 to 4 hours.
  • Vitamin K can affect how Warfarin works; tell your doctor before starting.
  • Avoid taking other supplements that also contain vitamin A, vitamin D or iron unless advised, to prevent taking too much.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to any ingredient of the product.
  • Conditions with too much iron or calcium in the body, such as haemochromatosis or high blood calcium.
  • Already taking high doses of vitamin A or vitamin D.

Side Effects

Usually well tolerated. Some people have mild stomach upset, nausea, constipation or an unpleasant taste. Stools may be darker because of iron, and urine may turn bright yellow because of vitamin B2; both are harmless.

Get urgent medical help for signs of an allergic reaction (rash, swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing) or if a child swallows several tablets.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Women who are pregnant or planning pregnancy should use a supplement made for pregnancy, as advised by their doctor, and avoid extra vitamin A. During breastfeeding a general multivitamin at the usual dose is normally fine; ask your doctor if unsure.

Precautions and Warnings

A supplement does not replace a balanced diet. Do not exceed the dose. People who smoke should ask a pharmacist before using products with high amounts of beta carotene. People with kidney disease should ask a doctor first. Keep tablets away from children, as iron can be dangerous to them.

Overdose

Taking many tablets at once, especially by a child, can cause iron poisoning with vomiting, stomach pain and diarrhoea, which may contain blood. Get urgent medical help even if the child seems well at first. Long-term high doses of vitamins A and D can also be harmful.

Therapeutic Class

Vitamin and mineral supplement.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light, with the container tightly closed and out of the reach of children.
