Telmisartan
What It Is Used For
Telmisartan lowers blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels. At higher doses it is also used to lower the risk of heart attack and stroke in people at high risk.
How to Take It
Usually 40 mg once a day, with or without food. The dose can range from 20 mg to 80 mg. Take it at the same time each day and do not stop without asking your doctor.
Who Should Not Take It
Do not take it if you are allergic to telmisartan, are pregnant, have severe liver disease or blocked bile flow, or have diabetes or kidney problems and take aliskiren.
Side Effects
Common: dizziness, back pain, diarrhoea and sinus or throat infections. It can raise blood potassium. Rarely: swelling of the face, lips or tongue (get help at once).
Precautions
Your doctor will check kidney function and potassium. Dizziness is more likely if you are dehydrated or take water tablets.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Do not take it in pregnancy; it can harm the baby. If you become pregnant, stop and see your doctor. Not recommended while breastfeeding.
Interactions
Potassium supplements and potassium-sparing diuretics can raise potassium. Painkillers like ibuprofen can reduce its effect. It can raise digoxin and lithium levels.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, out of the reach of children.
