About the Medicine

Ketorolac Tromethamine

What It Is Used For

Ketorolac is a strong non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used for a short time to relieve moderate to severe pain, usually after an operation. It is not meant for long-term pain such as arthritis.

How to Take It

It is usually given first as an injection in hospital. Tablets are then used as a follow-on: adults usually take 10 mg every 4 to 6 hours as needed, and no more than 40 mg a day. The total treatment, injection and tablets together, must not last more than 5 days. Take tablets with food or milk. Eye drops are used only as your eye doctor directs.

Who Should Not Take It

Do not take it if you are allergic to ketorolac, aspirin or other NSAIDs, have or have had a stomach ulcer or bleeding, have a bleeding disorder, kidney problems, severe heart failure, are dehydrated, are about to have major surgery, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are under 16 years old.

Side Effects

Common: stomach pain, indigestion, nausea, headache, dizziness and drowsiness. Get medical help straight away if you have black or bloody stools, vomit blood, pass much less urine, have chest pain, shortness of breath, or a serious skin rash.

Precautions

The risk of stomach bleeding and kidney damage is higher than with most painkillers, so do not take more than prescribed or for longer than 5 days. Elderly people and those under 50 kg usually need lower doses.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Do not use it during pregnancy, labour or breastfeeding.

Interactions

Do not take it with other NSAIDs, aspirin, blood thinners, probenecid or pentoxifylline. Tell your doctor if you take blood pressure medicines, water tablets, lithium, methotrexate or antidepressants.

Storage

Store below 30°C, protected from light, out of the reach of children.
