About the Medicine

Ketotifen

What It Is Used For

Ketotifen is an anti-allergy medicine. Taken by mouth, it helps prevent asthma attacks (mainly in children) and allergic conditions such as allergic rhinitis and allergic skin reactions. Ketotifen eye drops are used for itchy allergic eyes. It does not stop an asthma attack that has started.

How to Take It

Adults and children over 3 years: usually 1 mg twice a day with food (morning and evening). Children 6 months to 3 years: dose by weight as the doctor sets, as syrup. Full benefit for asthma can take several weeks. Do not stop other asthma medicines unless the doctor says so.

Who Should Not Take It

Do not take it if you are allergic to ketotifen.

Side Effects

Common: drowsiness (especially at first), dry mouth, dizziness, increased appetite and weight gain. Children may sometimes become excitable or have trouble sleeping.

Precautions

Do not drive or use machines if you feel sleepy. Tell your doctor if you have epilepsy.

Use only if a doctor advises it.

Interactions

Alcohol, sleeping pills, antihistamines and other sedating medicines add to drowsiness. Tell your doctor if you take diabetes tablets.
