Sharbat Tiflin
Indications
Sharbat Tiflin is a Unani herbal syrup made for infants and young children (tifl means child). It is traditionally given for common childhood digestive complaints such as wind, colic, mild stomach upset, poor appetite and loose motions, including the digestive upsets that often come with teething. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited. It is not a treatment for dehydration, high fever or infection.
How It Works
The syrup contains a blend of herbs that, in the Unani system, are described as calming the stomach, easing wind and supporting digestion. Many such herbs (for example aniseed or fennel type seeds) contain aromatic oils that relax the gut muscles. How the full combination works has not been well studied.
Dosage and Administration
Give it only as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner, using the measuring cup or spoon provided. The amount depends on the child's age. Do not give more than the stated amount.
Interactions
No well documented interactions are known. Ask a doctor or pharmacist before giving it together with other medicines or herbal products to a child.
Contraindications
Do not give it if the child is allergic to any ingredient. Do not use it in place of medical care for a child who is very unwell.
Side Effects
It is usually well tolerated. Rarely, a child may have a rash, vomiting or increased fussiness. Stop using it if this happens.
Get urgent medical help if the child has signs of dehydration (very little urine, dry mouth, no tears, sunken eyes or soft spot, unusual sleepiness), blood in stools, repeated vomiting, a high fever, a swollen or hard tummy, or difficulty breathing or facial swelling.
Pregnancy and Lactation
This product is meant for children. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take it themselves unless advised by a doctor.
Precautions and Warnings
For babies with diarrhoea, oral rehydration solution and continued breastfeeding are the most important treatment. See a doctor if symptoms last more than a day or two in an infant. Syrups contain sugar, so clean the child's teeth or gums after use. Check the label for any added alcohol and avoid such products in infants.
Overdose
If a child has swallowed a large amount, contact a doctor or the nearest hospital, and take the bottle with you.
Therapeutic Class
Unani herbal preparation (traditional digestive and carminative for children).
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Keep the bottle tightly closed and use within the period stated on the label after opening.
