Tolnaftate
Indications
Tolnaftate is an antifungal medicine applied to the skin. It is used to treat and help prevent athlete's foot (tinea pedis), and to treat jock itch (tinea cruris, a rash in the groin), ringworm of the body (tinea corporis) and pityriasis versicolor (patches of lighter or darker skin caused by yeast). It is not effective for fungal infections of the nails or scalp, or for Candida (yeast) infections.
How It Works
Tolnaftate blocks an enzyme (squalene epoxidase) that skin fungi need to make the walls of their cells. This stops the fungus from growing, which relieves itching, scaling and cracking and lets the skin heal.
Dosage and Administration
Adults and children over 2 years: wash and dry the affected area well, then apply a thin layer of 1% cream, powder, solution or spray twice daily (morning and night), covering a small area of healthy skin around the rash. Treatment usually takes 2 weeks for jock itch and 4 weeks for athlete's foot or ringworm; continue for 1 to 2 weeks after the skin looks clear to prevent return. For prevention of athlete's foot, the powder or spray can be used once or twice daily. Wash your hands after use.
Interactions
No important interactions with other medicines are known, because very little is absorbed through the skin. Avoid using other creams on the same area at the same time unless your doctor advises it.
Contraindications
Do not use if you are allergic to tolnaftate or any ingredient of the product.
Side Effects
- Mild stinging, irritation or redness where it is applied (uncommon)
- Rarely, an allergic skin rash (contact dermatitis)
Stop using it and get urgent medical help if you develop swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, or a severe rash with blisters.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Very little tolnaftate is absorbed through the skin and it is generally considered low risk, but ask a doctor or pharmacist before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If used while breastfeeding, do not apply it to the breast area.
Precautions and Warnings
For external use only. Keep away from the eyes, mouth and other mucous membranes. Do not use on children under 2 years unless a doctor advises it. See a doctor if there is no improvement after 4 weeks (2 weeks for jock itch), if the rash gets worse, or if you have diabetes or poor circulation with a foot infection. Keep the skin clean and dry, change socks daily and avoid sharing towels. Sprays may be flammable: do not use near a flame and do not smoke while using.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely when used on the skin. If swallowed, rinse the mouth and contact a doctor or poison centre.
Therapeutic Class
Topical antifungal agent (thiocarbamate).
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Keep sprays away from heat and do not puncture or burn the can.
