Betahistine Dihydrochloride
Indications
Betahistine Dihydrochloride is used to treat Meniere's disease, an inner ear condition that causes repeated attacks of vertigo (a spinning feeling), ringing in the ears (tinnitus) and hearing loss. It is also used for vertigo caused by other inner ear (vestibular) problems.
How It Works
Betahistine is similar to histamine. It is thought to improve blood flow in the inner ear and reduce the build-up of fluid pressure there. It also acts on balance centres in the brain, helping the body adjust and reducing how often and how badly vertigo attacks occur.
Dosage and Administration
The usual adult dose is 24 to 48 mg a day, divided into 2 or 3 doses (for example 16 mg three times a day or 24 mg twice a day), as prescribed. Take with or after food to reduce stomach upset. It may take several weeks to see the full benefit, so keep taking it as directed. Not recommended for children under 18 years.
Interactions
Antihistamines such as Chlorphenamine, Cetirizine or Promethazine may reduce the effect of Betahistine. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), including Selegiline, may increase Betahistine levels. Tell your doctor about all medicines you take.
Contraindications
Do not take if you are allergic to Betahistine, or if you have phaeochromocytoma (a rare tumour of the adrenal gland that causes very high blood pressure).
Side Effects
- Nausea, indigestion and mild stomach pain
- Bloating
- Headache
- Skin itching or rash
Get urgent medical help if you have swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or a severe widespread rash.
Pregnancy and Lactation
There is not enough information on safety in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Avoid use unless a doctor decides it is clearly needed.
Precautions and Warnings
Use with care if you have asthma, a history of stomach or duodenal ulcer, or urticaria (hives), as Betahistine may make these worse. Tell your doctor if you have a rare inherited problem that affects how the body handles lactose, depending on the tablet ingredients. It does not usually cause drowsiness, but vertigo itself can affect driving.
Overdose
An overdose may cause nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, drowsiness and, at very high doses, fits or heart problems. Seek medical help immediately.
Therapeutic Class
Anti-vertigo medicine, histamine analogue.
