About the Medicine

Tioconazole

Indications

Tioconazole is an antifungal medicine used on the skin, nails and vagina. Cream or lotion is used for fungal skin infections such as ringworm (tinea), athlete's foot, jock itch, pityriasis versicolor and skin candidiasis (yeast infection). A nail solution is used for fungal and yeast infections of the nails. A vaginal ointment or pessary is used for vaginal thrush.

How It Works

Tioconazole belongs to the imidazole group. It blocks the fungus from making ergosterol, an essential part of its cell membrane. Without it, the membrane becomes leaky and the fungus stops growing and dies. It also has some activity against certain bacteria found in skin infections.

Dosage and Administration

Skin cream or lotion: clean and dry the area and apply thinly once or twice a day, usually for 2 to 6 weeks; continue for about 1 to 2 weeks after the rash clears. Nail solution: paint onto the affected nails and surrounding skin twice a day, usually for 6 to 12 months, as directed. Vaginal ointment: usually a single applicator dose inserted at bedtime, as directed on the pack. Children: as prescribed. Wash hands after use.

Interactions

Interactions are unlikely because little is absorbed. Vaginal products may weaken latex condoms and diaphragms, so use another method of contraception during and for a few days after treatment. People taking Warfarin should tell their doctor before using vaginal azole products, as bleeding risk may change.

Contraindications

Do not use tioconazole if you are allergic to it or to other imidazole antifungals such as Clotrimazole or Miconazole.

Side Effects

Local irritation, burning, itching, redness, swelling or dryness may occur where it is applied. The nail solution can cause irritation around the nail. Vaginal use may cause burning, itching or discharge, and sometimes irritation of the partner.

Get urgent medical help if you notice signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, or a widespread rash. Also see a doctor if irritation is severe, or if vaginal symptoms come with fever, abdominal pain or foul-smelling discharge.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Skin and nail use is unlikely to cause harm, but use in pregnancy only on a doctor's advice. Vaginal tioconazole is not recommended in pregnancy unless a doctor advises; vaginal thrush in pregnancy should be checked by a doctor. Small amounts used on the skin are considered acceptable during breastfeeding; avoid applying to the breast.

Precautions and Warnings

For external use only; avoid the eyes and mouth. Keep the affected area clean and dry. Do not stop early, or the infection may return. See a doctor if there is no improvement after 2 weeks for skin infections, if vaginal thrush keeps returning, or if you have diabetes or a weak immune system. The nail solution is flammable; keep away from flames.

Overdose

Overdose is unlikely with normal use. If a product is swallowed, seek medical advice.
