About the Medicine

Travoprost

Indications

Travoprost eye drops are used to lower raised pressure inside the eye in adults with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension (high eye pressure). Lowering eye pressure helps protect the optic nerve and prevent loss of sight. It is sometimes combined with Timolol in one bottle.

How It Works

Travoprost is a prostaglandin analogue. It increases the drainage of fluid out of the eye, which lowers the pressure inside the eye.

Dosage and Administration

Adults: 1 drop in the affected eye or eyes once a day, preferably in the evening. Do not use more than once a day, because using it more often can make it work less well. After putting in the drop, close the eye and press gently on the inner corner of the eye for about 1 minute. If you use other eye drops, wait at least 5 minutes between them. Do not let the bottle tip touch the eye or any surface. Not recommended for children unless prescribed by an eye specialist.

Interactions

Do not use with other prostaglandin eye drops, such as Latanoprost or Bimatoprost, unless your eye doctor advises it, as using two together can raise eye pressure. Other glaucoma drops can usually be used alongside it.

Contraindications

Allergy to travoprost or any other ingredient, including the preservative.

Side Effects

Common: red eyes, itching, eye discomfort, dry eyes and a feeling of something in the eye. Gradual changes that may be permanent: the coloured part of the eye (iris) may become browner, especially in eyes of mixed colour; eyelashes may grow longer, thicker and darker; and the skin around the eye may darken.

Get urgent medical help if you have eye pain, a sudden change or loss of vision, severe redness or swelling, discharge or other signs of eye infection, or signs of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing or swelling of the face.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Should not be used during pregnancy unless the eye doctor considers it essential. Women who could become pregnant should use effective contraception. Not recommended while breastfeeding unless the doctor advises it.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Glaucoma usually has no symptoms; keep using the drops and attend eye pressure checks even if your eyes feel fine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have eye inflammation (uveitis), have had cataract surgery or have a history of eye swelling at the back of the eye (macular oedema).
  • Remove contact lenses before use and wait 15 minutes before putting them back.
  • Vision may blur briefly after the drop; do not drive until it clears.
  • If only one eye is treated, the colour and eyelash changes may make the eyes look different.

Overdose

If too many drops go into the eye, rinse with clean lukewarm water. If the drops are swallowed, especially by a child, seek medical advice.
