About the Medicine

Trypan Blue

Indications

Trypan Blue is a blue dye used by eye surgeons during operations. In cataract surgery it stains the thin, clear capsule around the lens so it can be seen clearly and opened safely, especially when the cataract is dense or white and the red reflex is poor. Some preparations are also used to stain membranes on the surface of the retina during vitreoretinal surgery.

How It Works

Trypan Blue is a vital dye that sticks to and colours certain tissues, such as the lens capsule and retinal membranes, blue for a short time. This contrast helps the surgeon see transparent structures and perform precise steps, such as making a round opening in the capsule. Excess dye is washed out of the eye during the operation.

Dosage and Administration

Trypan Blue is used only by an eye surgeon in the operating theatre. A small amount is placed inside the eye during the procedure, left briefly and then rinsed out. The amount and technique are as directed by the surgeon and the product instructions. It is never used as eye drops at home.

Interactions

No important interactions with other medicines are known, as it is used once in a tiny amount inside the eye and washed out. Tell the surgical team about all medicines and eye drops you use.

Contraindications

It should not be used in people known to be allergic to Trypan Blue or any ingredient of the product. Surgeons may avoid it in some situations, for example certain types of soft contact lens implants that may absorb the dye.

Side Effects

Side effects are uncommon. The white of the eye or the clear front window (cornea) may look slightly blue for a few days. Rarely, the dye may stain an implanted lens, cause inflammation inside the eye or affect the inner lining cells of the cornea. Allergic reactions are rare.

After eye surgery, get urgent medical help if you have increasing eye pain, worsening redness, a sudden drop in vision, discharge from the eye, or flashes and a curtain over your vision.

Pregnancy and Lactation

There is little information on use in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Because only a tiny amount is used inside the eye and washed out, exposure is expected to be very low, but the surgeon will decide whether it is appropriate. Tell the team if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Precautions and Warnings

Used only by trained surgeons with sterile technique. Follow all post-operative instructions, use any prescribed eye drops and attend follow-up visits. Mild blue tint of the eye is expected and fades on its own.

Overdose

Overdose is unlikely, as the surgeon controls the amount and washes out excess dye. Too much dye left in the eye could increase staining or irritation; the surgeon manages this.

Therapeutic Class

Ophthalmic surgical dye (diagnostic staining agent).

Storage

Store as directed on the pack, usually below 25°C and protected from light. Single-use sterile product kept in the hospital, out of the reach of children.
