White Kidney Bean Extract
Indications
White Kidney Bean Extract comes from the common white bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). It is sold as a weight management supplement, often described as a starch blocker, to be taken with meals rich in starchy foods such as rice, bread or potatoes. It may also be used to help limit the rise in blood sugar after such meals. Studies show at most a small effect on weight, and it works only alongside a healthy diet and regular activity.
How It Works
The extract contains a protein that partly blocks alpha amylase, the digestive enzyme that breaks starch down into sugar. Less starch is digested and absorbed, so fewer calories and less sugar enter the blood from that meal. The undigested starch passes to the large bowel, where gut bacteria ferment it.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label, usually just before a meal that contains starchy food. Swallow with water. It has no effect on fat or simple sugars.
Interactions
- It may add to the blood sugar lowering effect of diabetes medicines such as Metformin, Gliclazide or Insulin; check your sugar levels and talk to your doctor.
- Tell your doctor about all medicines and supplements you take.
Contraindications
- Allergy to beans, legumes or any ingredient.
- Children, and people with eating disorders.
Side Effects
The most common effects are wind, bloating, stomach rumbling, cramps and loose stools, caused by undigested starch reaching the bowel. These are usually mild.
Get urgent medical help if you have signs of a serious allergic reaction (swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, widespread rash), or symptoms of low blood sugar that do not improve, such as shaking, sweating, confusion or fainting.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Weight loss supplements are not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Do not use this product at these times.
Precautions and Warnings
- People with diabetes should monitor blood sugar closely when starting it.
- Raw or poorly processed kidney beans contain natural toxins; use only properly made commercial products.
- It is not a substitute for a balanced diet; seek medical advice for significant weight problems.
Overdose
Taking too much may cause marked bloating, cramps, diarrhoea and, in people on diabetes medicines, low blood sugar. Seek medical advice if symptoms are severe.
