Vitamin B Complex
Indications
Vitamin B complex is a mixture of B vitamins, usually Thiamine (B1), Riboflavin (B2), Nicotinamide (B3), Pantothenic acid (B5) and Pyridoxine (B6), and often Cyanocobalamin (B12) and other B vitamins. It is used to prevent and treat B vitamin deficiency caused by poor diet, alcohol use, long illness, recovery after surgery, pregnancy and breastfeeding, and some medicines. Doctors also use it as support in nerve problems linked to vitamin deficiency.
How It Works
B vitamins help the body turn food into energy, keep nerves, skin and the gut healthy, and make red blood cells.
Dosage and Administration
- Tablets or syrup: the dose depends on the product strength; usually 1 tablet 1 to 3 times a day for adults, or as directed on the pack or by the doctor.
- Children: syrup or drops as directed on the pack or by the doctor.
- Injection: given by a doctor or nurse, as prescribed.
Take with or after food.
Interactions
High doses of Pyridoxine (B6) can weaken Levodopa when taken without Carbidopa, and may lower Phenytoin and Phenobarbital levels. Medicines such as Isoniazid, Metformin, acid reducers and some anticonvulsants can lower B vitamin levels, which is one reason doctors prescribe this supplement.
Contraindications
Allergy to any of the vitamins or other ingredients in the product. Products containing B12 should not be used for Leber disease (a rare inherited eye condition).
Side Effects
Usually well tolerated. Bright yellow urine is common and harmless (caused by Riboflavin). Some people have mild nausea, stomach upset or flushing. Injections can cause pain at the injection site.
Get urgent medical help if you have signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, or a widespread rash, especially soon after an injection.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Safe at normal recommended doses during pregnancy and breastfeeding; B vitamin needs are higher at these times. Avoid high-dose products unless a doctor advises them.
Precautions and Warnings
Do not take high doses for long periods without medical advice, as long-term high doses of B6 can damage nerves. Supplements do not replace a balanced diet. If symptoms such as tingling, numbness or tiredness continue, see a doctor.
Overdose
Serious harm from a single large dose is unlikely. Long-term high doses can cause nerve problems. Stop taking it and seek medical advice if you feel unwell.
Therapeutic Class
