Urea (10%)
Indications
Urea 10% cream or lotion is a moisturiser used for dry, rough, scaly or itchy skin. It helps conditions such as dry skin in older people, eczema-related dryness, ichthyosis (inherited very scaly skin), cracked heels, and thickened skin on the elbows, knees, hands and feet.
How It Works
Urea is a natural part of the skin's own moisturising factor. At 10% strength it draws water into the outer layer of the skin and holds it there, so the skin becomes softer and more flexible. It also gently loosens dry, dead skin cells so scales come away more easily.
Dosage and Administration
Apply a thin layer to clean, dry skin two to three times a day, or as directed on the label, and rub in gently. It works best after bathing while the skin is still slightly damp. Wash your hands after use unless the hands are being treated. For external use only.
Interactions
Urea can increase how much of other creams or ointments applied to the same area is absorbed into the skin (for example steroid creams). If you use other skin medicines, ask your doctor or pharmacist how to space them.
Contraindications
- Allergy to Urea or any ingredient of the product.
- Do not apply to broken, raw, infected or weeping skin.
Side Effects
It is usually well tolerated. A mild stinging, burning or warm feeling may occur, especially on cracked or very dry skin or in young children; this usually settles. Redness or irritation can occur rarely.
Stop using it and get urgent medical help if you develop signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as widespread rash, swelling of the face or lips, or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Urea 10% applied to the skin is generally considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding because it is a natural substance and very little is absorbed. Do not apply to the breast area just before feeding.
Precautions and Warnings
- Avoid contact with the eyes, mouth, inside of the nose and other mucous membranes.
- Use with care on the face and in young children, where stinging is more common.
- If the skin condition does not improve in 2 to 4 weeks, or gets worse, see a doctor.
Overdose
Using too much on the skin may cause irritation; wash off the excess. If swallowed, rinse the mouth and drink water; contact a doctor if large amounts were swallowed or symptoms occur.
Therapeutic Class
Emollient and keratolytic (skin moisturiser and softener), topical.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Keep the tube or bottle tightly closed.
