Fennel [Mouri, Gohkshura, Kasni]
Indications
This is a herbal combination based on fennel (mouri), together with gokshura (Tribulus terrestris) and kasni (chicory, Cichorium intybus), used in Unani and Ayurvedic urinary preparations. Traditionally such combinations are used to ease burning or discomfort when passing urine, to increase urine flow, and to support kidney and bladder health, including as a supportive remedy for small urinary stones and high uric acid. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited, and it does not replace antibiotics for a urinary infection or proper treatment of kidney stones or gout.
How It Works
Fennel contains aromatic oils that relax smooth muscle and ease wind and cramps. Gokshura and kasni are described as mild diuretics, meaning they may increase the amount of urine passed, which helps flush the urinary tract. Chicory also contains plant compounds that may support the liver. Effects in people are not well studied.
Dosage and Administration
Take the product as directed on the label or by a registered Unani or Ayurvedic practitioner. Drink plenty of water while using it unless your doctor has told you to limit fluids.
Interactions
Because it may increase urine flow, it could add to the effect of diuretic (water) tablets such as Furosemide, and may affect blood levels of Lithium. Gokshura may lower blood sugar and blood pressure, so take care with diabetes and blood pressure medicines. Fennel may reduce the absorption of Ciprofloxacin, so take them a few hours apart.
Contraindications
Do not use it if you are allergic to fennel, chicory, carrot, celery or related plants. Avoid it in severe kidney disease, heart failure with fluid restriction, or if you have gallstones, unless a doctor advises it.
Side Effects
It is usually well tolerated. Possible effects include stomach upset, loose stools, increased urination and, rarely, skin sensitivity to sunlight or allergic reactions.
Get urgent medical help if you have fever with back or side pain, blood in the urine, inability to pass urine, severe stomach or flank pain, or swelling of the face, lips or throat or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Medicinal amounts of fennel and gokshura are not recommended during pregnancy, and safety in breastfeeding is not established. Avoid it during these times.
Precautions and Warnings
Burning urine, frequent urination or blood in the urine can be caused by infection, stones or other problems that need testing and specific treatment. See a doctor if symptoms last more than two days or come with fever. People with hormone-sensitive conditions should ask a doctor before using fennel products for long periods.
Overdose
Too much may cause stomach upset, dehydration from passing a lot of urine, or dizziness. Seek medical advice if symptoms are severe or a child has swallowed a large amount.
