Tila Jadeed [Sambul Phar, Shire Madar, Beer Bahoti]
Indications
Tila Jadeed is a Unani medicated oil for external use only. It contains Sambul Far (a purified arsenic compound), Shir-e-Madar (the milky latex of the Calotropis plant) and Beer Bahoti (the dried red velvet mite), usually in an oil base. In Unani practice it is traditionally applied to the male organ for weakness, poor firmness and reduced sensation. Scientific evidence for this use is limited and it does not cure erectile dysfunction.
How It Works
The ingredients are strong irritants. When rubbed on the skin they increase local warmth and blood flow, which is the traditional basis for their use as a stimulating oil. Because they irritate the skin, they can also cause redness, burning and blisters.
Dosage and Administration
Use only as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner. Usually a few drops are applied gently to the skin of the shaft, avoiding the tip and the opening. Wash hands well after use. Never swallow it, and never apply it to broken, sore or inflamed skin.
Interactions
Do not use other creams, oils or sprays on the same area at the same time. Tell your doctor about any medicines you take, especially medicines for erectile problems (for example Sildenafil) or blood thinners.
Contraindications
- Allergy or sensitivity to any ingredient.
- Broken skin, wounds, infection or skin disease in the area.
- Children and women.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Side Effects
Burning, redness, itching, swelling, peeling and blistering of the skin are common, especially with overuse. Repeated use of arsenic compounds on the skin can lead to absorption into the body.
Get urgent medical help if you develop severe burning, large blisters or open sores, swelling that does not settle, an erection lasting more than 4 hours, or if the oil is swallowed or gets into the eyes.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Not for use by women. Keep it well away from pregnant or breastfeeding women, because the ingredients can be toxic.
Precautions and Warnings
This is a potent product: it contains an arsenic compound and Calotropis latex, both of which are poisonous if swallowed and can damage the eyes. For external use only. Do a small test on the skin first, use the smallest amount, and stop if irritation develops. Use a condom or wash the area before sexual contact so the partner is not exposed. Erection problems may be a sign of diabetes, heart disease or high blood pressure, so see a doctor if they continue.
Overdose
Applying too much can cause severe skin burns. If swallowed, it can cause vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea and arsenic poisoning: go to a hospital immediately and take the bottle with you. If it gets in the eyes, rinse with plenty of clean water and seek care.
Therapeutic Class
Unani herbal and mineral preparation for external use (topical stimulant oil).
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and locked away out of the reach of children. Keep the bottle tightly closed.
