About the Medicine

Multivitamin & Multimineral [a-Z Silver Preparation]

Indications

This multivitamin and multimineral formula is made for adults aged 50 and over. It is used as a daily supplement to help cover vitamins and minerals that may be low in the diet, for example with a poor appetite, a restricted diet, or during recovery from illness. It does not replace a balanced diet.

How It Works

It supplies a broad range of vitamins (such as A, the B group including B12, C, D, E and K) and minerals (such as calcium, magnesium, zinc, selenium and iodine) in amounts close to daily needs. Formulas for older adults usually contain more vitamin D and B12, which are often low with age, and little or no iron.

Dosage and Administration

Adults aged 50 and over: 1 tablet or capsule a day with a meal and a glass of water, or as directed on the pack. Do not take more than the recommended dose, and do not take it together with another multivitamin unless a doctor advises it. Not intended for children.

Interactions

  • Calcium, magnesium, zinc and iron reduce the absorption of some medicines, including Ciprofloxacin, Levofloxacin, Doxycycline, Tetracycline, Levothyroxine and Alendronate. Take these medicines at least 2 to 4 hours apart from the supplement.
  • Vitamin K can reduce the effect of Warfarin; keep your intake steady and tell your doctor.
  • Taking other supplements that contain vitamin A, vitamin D or calcium at the same time may lead to too much.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to any ingredient
  • High blood calcium or vitamin D levels
  • Iron overload conditions such as haemochromatosis, if the product contains iron
  • Severe kidney disease, unless a doctor advises it

Side Effects

Usually well tolerated. Some people have mild nausea, stomach upset, constipation or an unpleasant taste; taking it with food helps. Urine may turn bright yellow because of vitamin B2 (riboflavin); this is harmless.

Get urgent medical help for signs of an allergic reaction (rash, swelling, difficulty breathing) or signs of too much vitamin A or D, such as severe headache, confusion, repeated vomiting, extreme thirst or passing a lot of urine.

Pregnancy and Lactation

This formula is not designed for pregnancy or breastfeeding. Women who are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding should use a supplement made for pregnancy, containing folic acid, as advised by their doctor. High doses of vitamin A can harm an unborn baby.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Ask your doctor or pharmacist first if you take regular medicines, or have kidney disease, kidney stones or a long-term illness.
  • Current or former smokers should ask a doctor before long-term use of products high in beta-carotene.
  • Tell your doctor you take it before blood tests, as some vitamins (such as biotin) can affect results.

Overdose

An accidental overdose, especially by a child, can be dangerous, particularly if the product contains iron. Seek medical help straight away. In adults, taking a few extra tablets usually causes only stomach upset, but get advice if you feel unwell.

Therapeutic Class

Vitamin and mineral supplement.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Keep the container tightly closed.
