About the Medicine

Ubidecarenone [Coenzyme Q10]

Indications

Ubidecarenone, better known as Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), is a nutritional supplement. It is used to correct low CoQ10 levels and is often taken as an add-on alongside standard treatment for heart failure, for muscle aches linked to statin cholesterol medicines, for migraine prevention and to support sperm quality in male infertility. Evidence for these uses is mixed, so it should support, not replace, prescribed treatment.

How It Works

CoQ10 is a substance the body makes naturally. It helps cells turn food into energy (in the mitochondria, the energy centres of cells) and acts as an antioxidant, which means it helps protect cells from damage. Levels can fall with age, in some illnesses and with statin use.

Dosage and Administration

Adults: usually 30 to 100 mg a day. Some conditions use up to 200 mg a day split into two doses, but only as the doctor advises. Take with a meal that contains some fat, as this helps absorption. Not for children unless a doctor advises.

Interactions

  • Warfarin: CoQ10 may weaken its effect. If you take Warfarin, your INR (blood clotting test) should be checked when starting or stopping CoQ10.
  • Blood pressure and diabetes medicines: CoQ10 may lower blood pressure or blood sugar slightly.
  • Statins (such as Atorvastatin) can lower the body's CoQ10 levels.

Contraindications

Allergy to ubidecarenone or any ingredient of the product.

Side Effects

Usually well tolerated. Possible effects include stomach upset, nausea, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, heartburn, headache, rash and trouble sleeping (more likely with doses taken late in the day).

Get urgent medical help if you notice signs of an allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing or a widespread itchy rash.

Pregnancy and Lactation

There is not enough safety information for pregnancy or breastfeeding. Use only if your doctor advises it.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Do not stop heart, blood pressure or diabetes medicines in favour of CoQ10.
  • If you have low blood pressure, check with your doctor first.
  • Tell your doctor you take it before surgery.

Overdose

Large doses are unlikely to be dangerous but may cause nausea, diarrhoea or stomach pain. Seek medical advice if a child swallows a large amount.

Therapeutic Class

Antioxidant and nutritional supplement.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Keep out of reach of children.
