About the Medicine

Marham Aramin

Indications

Marham Aramin is a Unani herbal ointment (marham means ointment). It is traditionally used on the skin for relief of joint pain, muscle pain, backache, stiffness, sprains and mild swelling. The exact herbal ingredients can differ between makers, so check the label. Scientific evidence is limited, and it does not cure arthritis or other joint diseases.

How It Works

Unani pain ointments usually contain herbal oils and extracts that produce a warming or cooling feeling on the skin (counter-irritant effect). This distracts from deeper pain, improves local blood flow and may have a mild anti-inflammatory effect. Gentle massage while applying also helps relax stiff muscles.

Dosage and Administration

Use as directed on the label or by a registered practitioner. Usually a small amount is gently massaged into the painful area 2 to 3 times a day. Wash your hands after use. For external use only; do not swallow.

Interactions

No important interactions with medicines taken by mouth are expected. Avoid using other rubs, heat creams or heating pads on the same area at the same time, as this may cause burning.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to any ingredient
  • Broken, burned, infected or irritated skin
  • Eyes, mouth, inside the nose and genital areas

Side Effects

Possible effects include redness, a warm or burning feeling, itching or rash where it is applied.

Get urgent medical help if you develop blistering, severe burning, swelling of the face or lips, or difficulty breathing. See a doctor if a joint becomes hot, red and very swollen, or if pain follows an injury and you cannot use the limb.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been studied. Ask your doctor before use, use only on small areas, and do not apply to the breasts while breastfeeding.

Precautions and Warnings

Do not cover tightly with bandages. Keep away from eyes; wash hands well after use. Not for young children unless advised by a practitioner. See a doctor if pain lasts more than 7 days or keeps coming back.

Overdose

Applying too much may increase skin irritation; wash off with soap and water. If swallowed, especially by a child, seek medical advice.

Therapeutic Class

Unani herbal preparation (topical pain-relief ointment).

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Close the lid tightly.
