About the Medicine

Water for Injection

Indications

Water for Injection is sterile, pure water used to dissolve or dilute medicines that come as a powder or concentrate, so they can be given by injection or infusion. It is not a medicine on its own and is not meant for drinking.

How It Works

It has no medicinal effect. It works only as a solvent (a liquid that dissolves the medicine) and carries the medicine into the body.

Dosage and Administration

The amount used depends on the medicine being prepared and follows that medicine's instructions. It is prepared and given by a doctor or nurse using a clean (sterile) technique. Each ampoule or vial is for single use; any remaining water is thrown away.

Interactions

Water for Injection does not interact with medicines in the body. Some medicines must be mixed only with a different liquid, such as Sodium Chloride or Glucose solution, so the instructions of the medicine being dissolved must always be followed.

Contraindications

It must not be injected on its own into a vein in large amounts. Plain water can burst red blood cells (haemolysis) when it enters the blood directly.

Side Effects

Side effects usually come from the medicine being given rather than from the water. Pain, redness or irritation at the injection site may occur.

Get urgent medical help if, during or after an injection, there is a rash, swelling of the face or lips, difficulty breathing, chest tightness, dark red urine or sudden breathlessness.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Water for Injection itself is safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Whether the injection is suitable depends on the medicine it is used with.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Check that the ampoule or vial is undamaged and the water is clear, with no particles.
  • Use immediately after opening and do not reuse.
  • Use only for medicines whose instructions allow Water for Injection as the diluent.

Overdose

Large volumes given directly into a vein can damage red blood cells and upset the body's salt and fluid balance. This needs treatment in hospital.

Therapeutic Class

Solvent and diluent for injections (pharmaceutical aid).

Storage

Store below 30°C. Do not freeze. Keep out of the reach of children. Once opened, use straight away and discard the rest.
